Manhattan Beach has a big spending problem, not a revenue problem.
The current Council is spending irresponsibly and adding more expensive positions like a Deputy City Manager which we eliminated the last time I was on Council. Our reserves are being spent down and projects like the Senior/Scout House aren't getting done. No matter how this council tries to "spin it," they have spent the full $4 million in economic uncertainty reserves and $6.0 million from additional reserves. This Council also pushed "pause" on paying into the city's pension trust fund or contributing to the city's infrastructure reserves that will further delay important projects.
When I left Council in 2024, a sales tax increase (added $6.5 million) along with an increased stormwater fee boosted City revenue. We never dipped into reserves and we did not stop investing in our infrastructure.
But somehow, we've gone from financial stability to financial crisis in two short years!
WHERE DID THE MONEY GO??
This is no way to run a city! As mayor during the Great Recession and again during Covid, I offer proven crisis leadership.
"Our current council has dug us into a fiscal hole, and they keep digging!"
This has to stop. If you elect me, it will.
